I believe you are referring to RBL (Real-time Blackhole List) here, and
you seem to not have a clear understanding of how it works. While I am
no expert with RBL, I will attempt to let you know how any server is
listed in the RBL.
Firstly, if you are relaying spam or sending spam of your own, a
complaint must be made regarding your server. Unless a complaint has
been made to the administrator of an open relay, you cannot be listed
in the RBL. This is specifically required for situations just like
yours (if you are relaying without realising).
Once a complaint has been lodged with the administrator of the open
relay and a sufficient period of time for reply/fix has elapsed, your
server may then be referred to the RBL. The first thing the RBL does is
email you to attempt a solution. In your case (suspected relaying), the
guys at RBL will advise you on how to secure your system and offer to
assist you where possible in order to close relaying through your
server.
If no response is forthcoming or you refuse to close your relay, then,
and only then may your server be added to the RBL. Removing yourself
from RBL is very simple - demonstrate that your server no longer
relays.
As you can see, it is quite difficult to be added to the RBL and very
simple to be removed from it. If you are in danger of being added to
the RBL, the administrators will attempt to help you resolve your
problems. They have a wide range of experience and can almost certainly
solve your problems of lack of suitable help for your sendmail version.
