The reason mail systems have had to be upgraded a lot recently is because
Internet security has been traditionally slack. Now that the Internet
is pervasive, you get all sorts of mischief makers online.
The blacklisting works like this: If your machine has been found to relay
spam, as confirmed by testing, they put you in the database. Other sites
can elect to use this information to decide whether or not to accept
mail from you. You don't have a right to require others to accept your
mail. When you have closed your relay you can request to be retested
and to be taken off if you are clean.
You'd change your tune if you saw how much spam can be relayed by one
unsuspecting open relay. Besides it does no good to your ISP bills.
