This happened in a company I was consulting for -- same
situation it seems.
The CEO was going to take legal action, but decided it was easier
to just sack the person and be done with it. No real damage was
done, and in the long run the material was not used or abused
by anyone else.
BUT! If trade secrets and valuable intellectual property were
sent in these emails, my guess is that a civil suit to recover
damages and costs could be made against the perpetrator.

If your company feels it could possibly suffer losses because
of this, they can sue for damages in the civil courts.

This is a civil case, not a criminal one. Contact
a lawyer.
