That's not quite right. From man resolv.conf
The domain and search keywords are mutually exclusive. If
more than one instance of these keywords is present, the
last instance wins.
so if you do ping server it will only try
server.vic.bigpond.net.au will never try server.home.becsta.net
It's probably working for you fine because of the entries in your hosts
files.
