Yes I configured networking but entered a blank for a gateway.
Now I will have to find out where Debian would have put the 
        "route add default gw <my_gateway_i_didnt_add>"

Yes. Looking on my windows box it tells me the gateway. I have now added
it correctly.

Thanks for all the help. apt-get is now working, Netscape is now
installed again. Now to find gvim, apt-get remove emacs :-)
