1) W98 DOES support encrypted passwords and without advanced-making-out in the 
registry you can't disable it

2) smbpasswd is your friend. Without it I do not know if you can login, or how 
to.

3) It's a real pain to try to not use encrypted passwds and trivially easy to 
do so
