I'm too late to see the glory of LUGS last time, but thinking of paying to join it last time, but unfortunately it's quite a mess. And ya, now things work different from last time. The web community becomes more social, there might be more non-technical joining.

Beit LUGS or SLMG, I believe it should not relate to FOSA too much.
FOSA should come from all Open Source Community instead of just Linux Community. But as a startup, there might not be much choice. I've attended OpenSolaris Meetup and then they did try to ask people to join.
But I don't see the spirit of all groups in doing so.

And as a matter of fact, taking a newly started society and also a mess society is the last thing people wish for, as they need to work 2x or more to get the stuff running.

Keeping FOSA out of this, FOSA and LUGS are different entities doing different things, though similar to some respects.

Running the whole community is one thing, but the spirit should be there. And there's a need to make the fire grow, and not down once again.

Therefore it's a tough job for all. I believe the whole situation now is "wait and see'. People are willing to volunteer, but not willing to be the ones heading the volunteering.

The direction, the plan is not clearly visible to all.
The system is unstable, just like developer's build.

The recipe of "Wait and See" is a great way to get nothing done. And having a direction will only happen when people like you and me take responsibility to make the direction and do something about it.

Actions create reactions. Sitting on the fence is idling and not very productive.

I'm really thinking, maybe the rest are thinking of a clear idea how significant it is, as compared to the current infrastructure of the Linux Community.

Current:
SLMG
TUSG
and perhaps others.

Revival:
A common platform for all Linux Group
Job Matchings for all Linux related
Course Certifications for all Linux related
Common Ground for Linux Community Work
Social Platform from all walks of Linux in Singapore
Common Activities/Meetups all in one place.
Work with the Educational Institutions in Singapore

These are great ideas and hopefully they will be some of the things that the new LUGS exco can work towards.

Other than this, other admin stuff.

Other than this, there's a need for volunteers, or better still, Sub-Committees, with the current upcoming Exco Structure. Planning and Estimating is the first steps, but whether it's before and after, it's another problem.
There might be part 2 if there's not enough people handling.

I foreseen a great committment in this, and really not sure I can really commit or not if the proper structure has not come out.
Therefore people find it hard to put their names there. Chicken and Egg.

Yes it may seem this way. But really by joining the exco you can help build the proper structure and work towards achieving your goals. That is the great thing about taking responsibility, it makes you the guiding light.

Perhaps in other countries, people volunteer first and define and plan later. But in Singapore context, people might need some definition or the scope, think once, think twice and before putting name down.

Personally I like the way they do it in other countries ;) things actually get done.

Like in certain case, you put your name down, and just don't want to be the president of the society, but in the end no choice, because people vote, and other positions are filled. And then it's not a good outcome. And for committment, it's uncertainty for different roles.

This is why, there are not much people putting names down, even though they are interested.

That is precisely why I am suggesting to cut the exco down to 3 people, with 6 "guardians" with no responsibility except for monitoring the direction of LUGS. Much easier to find 3 exco than 6.

That's why I'm still deciding too.

Hope I have convinced you :) A 3 person team will be agile to get stuff done and personally I plan to try and use the community to help us achieve something better for LUGS.

Regards
John
