You bet, that is the right way to connect cable to these radios. You can hook this up hanging from a tower in 30 mile an hour winds with a flashlight in your mouth. (Yes I have had to do this! ) Just try that with an RJ-45 crimper.

I would rather see a punch down connection before a screw down strip. I don't think the RJ-45 is bad, but would be nice to have it plug directly into the radio. The problem with having a screw down strip or a punch down strip on the radio would be trying to get up to the radio to screw the wires down or punch the wires down. Alot of time you have to reach up over your head to plug the RJ-45 connector in which can be pre made on the ground.

Just my $.02

For now I think the pigtail is just fine. I think SB has bigger fish to fry right now with getting these radios stable. We have about 40-50 units deployed right now. We started installing these back in November. For the first 6 months everything was rock solid, but since the end of April things have fallen apart. Equipment just keeps flaking out. The main issues that we see are the Lock up problem and the ethernet going bad. Some of the ones that have gone bad were installed back in November and never gave us any issues until last month. We have experimented with diferent firmwares, but nothing seems to be fixing our issues. We are installing them the same today as we were back in November. We use the Motorola Canopy Ground block before we brinig the ethernet into the building. Is anyone else using the Canopy ground block?

All we can do is keep trying to figure out where the issue is coming from.

The smartbridge team has bent over backwards for us and I know they will come through on fixing this one too. But right now making these radios stable has to be the #1 thing on their list.

Thanks............Dan

IMHO the RJ-45 at the radio is a major point of failure. I believe a screw terminal strip would be more reliable, and should be in a separate

compartment from the electronics, that could be opened and resealed without exposing the radio parts.
Any length of outdoor Cat5 could be connected, and the radio could be changed without damaging the wire to the building.
Crimping a connector on Cat5 is shaky at best on the bench, not to mention on a roof or tower. The fewer unsoldered connections the better,

and RJ-45s can and do oxidize in damp environments. 24 gauge wire is too small for power regardless of what Ohms law says. Adding a flakey connector like an RJ-45 to it is asking for trouble. Sometimes real life

conditions are not what the formulas added up to. We are fighting mother

nature here and nature always wins. The natural cycle of corrosion and degradation has been going on for eons and it begins immediately upon exposure to air and humidity.

Thanks George. The earlier outdoor units has 50feet cable and because the length is vary on the client installation, that has changed to 1 foot cable with weatherproof connector. Now that also pose problem as you mentioned, suggesting to have direct RJ45 jack at the unit itself, is that what you guys want it? For the power supply, we are in the stage of developing a "Super Powershot" that is intelligent to adjust the voltage based on cable sensed.

Alex
No offense is meant. you guys have a nice product.
The number #1 thing a Wisp needs out of a radio is STABILITY. Advance features are nice, but, a radio that just runs and runs and runs is most important. A couple things I've noticed is that some of the problems I've had ranged from low quality poe adapter and wall wart transformer. to smaller gage conductors going to unit. My first time using an outdoor unit, I had to cut the end of the cable to get it into

the home . When I went to put a new end on I noticed the strands are smaller in size and it didn't fit snug into the end . I wonder if the smaller size conductor it self is a problem with power. voltage drop being the key word here. George

I read through the whole list about this topic. And thanks for the
info and input, we will definitely probe into this to analyse the situation that you people encounter. Not everyone has the same problem

though or rather not all devices has the problem; units that are
failing may either poor installation setup or the environment factors or even manufacturer defeats but these do not represent product issue.

And some seemed to fix the problem like using higher power voltage,
shielded twister pair, static IP, long preamble or for stable operation.

For those who have the problem, I urge you to write to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] so that we can address this in details individually and replace the units if required.

Nevertheless, your valuable input will help us to find ways to correct

such problem and improve the product reliability. We will keep you
updated.

We use statics also with public's on the clients. We however do not keep everything 192.168.0.22 and do change that for each customer.

I use statics and have had no problems either...I only have about 10
units deployed however, but they have been out for anywhere from 8 to

1

month.

You may have something there Joe. I don't use DHCP here either
(static

private on the airBridge and static public on the client) and we
don't have too many problems like those guys.

I had 3 units die from the "ethernet thing", but thats about it with
over 50 units in use. One or two customers have to do the unplug and replug back in, but that's not a show stopper and the customer is willing to continue waiting for the firmware fix.

Im starting to wonder why there are so many problems with S/B's. I

bought

some indoor gear day one. They had the chip problem as we all know.

I

returned those and started using the indoor units outside in
plastic

boxes

with pigtails. I have about 10 of them like that. When the outdoor

became

available I started using those. I now have 3 pops with close to 30

clients.

I have had 1 bad power shot, 1 dead indoor A/P from lightning and 1

bad
APPO

which I think my tech might have tightened the N connector to
tight.

Other

than that no problems. My clients never have to reset ever. I check

my

MRTG

graphs daily and they never skip a beat. I am using 2 statics IP's
for

each

client. So I am not using DHCP or subnetting. Im just wondering if

DHCP or

subnetting is where the bugs lie??

They do respond and not in a sales position. We have had bad

we

send them back. Otherwise, they are another tool in the toolbox,

the

seem to work well for the price. Use something else if you don't

I have to agree that rereliabilty is important on the other hand

I

think

they have earned every bit of the "manufacture of the year" I

don't
knwo

of

any other manufacture that listens and delivers as well as

Smartbridges.

They have some bugs but as you can see from this list they

dedicated to

finding and quickly resolving them.
As for phone support Smartbridges does have a hotline for

emergencies.

They

took my call at 4:00 am their time. You can't get much better
than

that.

I

know lots of companies that only have 8-5 support and no great

forum
like

this.
