Nish...thank you for the reply. We believe our cases of 'ethernet burnout'
has been caused by inductive pulse (from nearby thunderstorms) in some cases
as well as faulty power supplies in other cases. Also, I heard that SB
determined the capacitors on the ethernet side were undersized (can you
confirm?, was this fixed?). I agree that shielded CAT 5 is the way to go.
Since SB is recommending this it only makes sense that you modify the design
of the ABO to accept an enclosed CAT5 connector since the 8 inches of CAT5
you have hanging out of the units is not shielded. Stray (EMP) current could
induce itself in those 8 inches of exposed wire, correct?

Bobby,

The list had coined the phrase "Ethernet Burnout" for all problems that
had something to do with the Ethernet port failure. We brought back a
whole bunch of devices back to our lab for analysis. Some time ago I had
published a report on our RMA activity. Many of the failures seemed to
be related to crimping, water in the connector or cable etc. This is
what we mean by "improper installation".

John Hokenson has been a big proponent of using shielded CAT5 cable to
address the EMP related failures. It is a logical recommendation. Based
on some of these observations our Support Team had published these
recommendations -

Hope this helps.

Nish....not sure what you mean by "higher voltage power adapters". We
use
the adapters that come in the box with the radio. Also, please elaborate
as
to exactly how, in your opinion "improper installation" can cause
"Ethernet
Burnout". Please provide example(s) of "improper installation" that
would
lead to "Ethernet Burnout".

Also your comment about "we identified opportunities to improve and they
have been implemented for some time now"; our experience is that the
ABO's
are just as susceptible to Ethernet Burnout as they've always been.

Thanks....Bobby/Airwave Internet

We have thoroughly investigated the "Ethernet Burnout" issue and
conclude that most of those issues were caused by using higher voltage
power adapters. A few others may have been due to EMP or improper
installation.

During the investigation we had identified opportunities to improve and
they have been implemented for some time now. You may want to look at
the aBO again.

Ps. You may recall that the list has been quite for a while on this
issue.

Just got off the phone with EC. They are totally out of ABI's and API's.
They have 500 ABO's. We don't want the ABO's because of the "ethernet
dying"
problem.

Electro-Comm has only one June shipment sitting in their warehouse
waiting for the new CDs with the new firmware. The CDs will reach them
on Monday.

In the mean time they have received many other shipments with hardware
fix and these units do not require new CDs.

We have removed shipment hold as soon as we started shipping the
reworked units.

Will you still be asking Electro-Comm to put all units on hold until you

furnish CD's with the new software?
