My point about Star-Os as AP's is that a lot of the newer wisp's that haven't really had the experience don't understand that the AP is the most important piece of equipment in their network. It's critical to their business. Loose a cpe radio, you have one customer out of service, loose an AP, and your temporarily (hopefully) out of business. Not good for anyones reputation.
Some of us have learned the hard way when there really wasn't anything else available.
I myself started of using the Nokia 2meg Ap's and then the Teletronics 2 meg Ap's. Neither of which really could handle much for traffic and at best were cheap bridges. Then came along the single board computer with ram and a processor, now we have more powerfull computers running more complictaed routing schemes and AP functions.
Smart Bridges can't do that on what amounts to a wet 11 board that is no diferent than the old Tt AP.
Guess it would be like trying to run XP on a 386.
So my advice is to help educate these young wispersnappers( hahaha ) so they don't end up almost out of business.
And ...
Star-Os also is releasing 5.x this next month as well as a few other enhancements.
Either way, my advice for these Smart Bridges people having problems with their AP's is to replace their Smart Bridges Ap's with Star-Os or MT AP's.
I have better than 20 Star-OS AP's and I never have problems with them.
I did however today have to replace a Smartbridge outdoor unit with an EZ Bridge . The SmartBridges outdoor unit would only connect at 1meg even though the quality was better than 20. Ripped it out and installed the EZ bridge, and got 30 for quality and it connected at 11megs and stayed there.
My customers prefer getting 3-4 meg download rates and not packet loss.

Thanks George. They both work very well. Only reason why I still "stuck" with MT is because at first the Routerboards didn't support Star-OS and when I start to play with the MT and wireless I started to like it a lot and then on top of things you have 5.2-5-3,5.8Ghz support in MT. So often I end up building 5Ghz backhaul and using 802.11b to do ptmp support from there. Cleans up 2.4 and leave it for ptmp as well get better speeds so can easily support 2-4 ptmp APs out there at one location with one backhaul solution. Last time I heard there where no immediate plans to get that support in Star-OS.

G> The PART-15.ORG smartBridges Discussion ListSmartbridges may not be an effective solution if you are talking about a traditional mesh network, but if you insist, you are looking at what is commonly referred to as two units "back-to-back" meaning what Alex is saying. However, you need a hub/router/switch to accomplish this and provide subscriber #1 with access.
To eliminate the hub requirement, you can place two units at each site, one in client bridge mode connected directly to the user's computer, one in repeater mode with just power connected.

Subject: RE: [smartBridges] smartBridges as a mesh network?
If subscriber#2 can get the signal from subscriber #1, then you can put another access point at subscriber #1 for subscriber#2 using client device to associate with.
Main AP-----Subscriber#1----------Subscriber#2 (aPPT) (aBT & aPPT) (aBT)
The channel & ESSID will be configured differently for main AP to subscriber#1 and Subscriber#1 to subscriber#2.
Hope this help.

Opinions wanted, What would be the best way to use the smartBridges products as a mesh network environment?
Per instance say the main AP is the airPoint Pro Total and subscriber #1 is 1/2 mile away and can associate with the AP no problem.. but subscriber #2 is 1 mile away and can't get signal from the main AP. What would be the suggested smartBrudges unit to use at subscriber #1 location to repeat to subscriber #2..? and so on..?
Is it possible to do this and not use a obtrusive antenna on subscriber #1's house?
This is all pretty new to me but I'm ready to play!
Thanks in advance! Gary Johnson NightOwl Networks www.nightowl.net ---
