I get the feeling reading these posts as well as other posts that the 'conventional wisdom' is "amps won't help", "they amplify the noise", etc. etc.. These generalizations, though well intended, misrepresent the issue of using amps. As for us, we have two customers, 12 miles out using 1/4 watt amps on their side to compensate for the distance and the low signal strength and everything is peachy. They are getting 700 Kbps speeds and little or no drop off problems. We of course tried doing their installs w/o any amps first, then as a last resort put in the amps. I'm theorizing that when you are trying to do two way microwave radio communications over longer distances, extra power helps a great deal to overcome external effects such as interference, heat waves, multipath, fresnel zone, etc. Someone give me two cents please.
