Without a doubt, Netstumbler is for you. http://www.netstumbler.com - I
use it all the time, especially when I'm in a pinch for internet access.
I also use it when scoping out a new tower location, to see if there is
anyone else nearby on 2.4 - kind of a poor man's spectrum analyzer - but
it will not detect other 2.4GHz gear such as microwaves, cordless phones
and FHSS wireless, e.g. Alvarion.

With netstumbler in downtown colorado springs, free internet access is
plentiful.

Anyone have a good easy application I can use to fire up and detect
local wireless AP's?

I find myself more and more needing to find out the ESSID of a public AP
and don't know how. Example, was at a Hilton in NYC that had free
Internet access in the lobby (so you could log on to download porn
videos of Paris Hilton, no doubt) yet the front desk had no clue of what
the ESSID was. I tried "ANY" on my Linksys version one PCMCIA card but
found nothing. === Rick Kosick StarLinX Internet Service
