The Helix server for 4Mbps (about 12-16 movie streams) is $2K... ouch... tho the 1Mbps version is free (3-4 movie streams). It would take a LOT of video rentals to pay for that puppy.

I asked DivX about those features and got the following reply:

Q: Support multiple streams?

A: We use progressive downloads, better exp. for the customer. They can start watch the video as soon as the download begins, and they don't have to wait for streams to buffer.

Q: Have a way to keep a movie from being viewed by more than one client at a time? (or a setable number if you own more than one copy of the DVD).

A: We have a DRM solution. It is probably not possible to lock out everyone, but one customer from a specific download.

Q: Work with a set top box that could point to it over the LAN, surf the video server offerings, and display the stream on a TV?

A: Not just yet.

Q: Have a way to log the IP of a 'stream watcher' for billing later?

A: Everything is logged.

I also contacted SnapStream (listed as a server on DivX.com) and got the following answers to the same questions:

1) We support multiple streams from disk, only one from the livetv encoder

2) No there is no method for locking out content

3) No snapstreams interface is designed to only be used by internet

explorer 5 and above on windows

4) No the streams do not log what ip accessed them

Helix Server from realnetworks (www.real.com) is what you want. Download the trial Internet Server. Supports MPEG4 Compliant Streams (Not DIVX I think), WMA, WMV, MP3, MOV, RM and a zillion others. It's not cheap if you opt to buy it though. It's got a pure HTML interface with java server monitor and loads of enterprise options (broadcast, unicast, multicast, licensing, player tracking - soooo many). I seem to remember everything worked in the trial version, or they might have restricted number of connections - been a while. Oh, it can also run on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS I think - at least thats what they say.

We also need a decent server... something that:

-has an easy HTML client interface so you can point computers or STBs at it
-has accounting so you know who watched what
-can limit the number of people watching a particular movie file to the number of copies of the movie you own

If we had a server package, we could beta-test the service to clients that don't mind watching movies on their computer screen.

Now if we could get those in a bulk purchase to get the price down
to around $99 each we would be set.

Quick, everyone start upgrading your backhauls to .11a or g. You're
gonna need it...  :-)
