Martin,

Are you sure that you're using the right platform file? There are distinct 
versions for both CD and USB booting. From the website:

        • smartos-(timestamp).iso: Live Image ISO
        • smartos-(timestamp)-usb.img.bz2: Live Image USB image (This is the 
preferred installation method)

The instructions at 
http://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Creating+a+SmartOS+Bootable+USB+Key worked 
fine for me on Mac, Linux and Solaris/SmartOS/OpenIndiana. Did you follow them 
closely?
