I think this is done by the evolution project which has the evolution
data server for contact information.[1] That server will allow any
program to share addressbook information and is even used by empathy to
exchange information on instant messaging contacts etc. This also
provides calender management and webcal access.

The only thing you can probably complain about is that it is not
"little", so I'm going to see if I can get that running and working with
a dialer app. I hope it is going to be as simply as "apt-get install
evolution-data-server python-gnome2-desktop" and then start working with
it ;)
