Yes, there are options to 'run shell script before (or after) copy'. You're right that it can't be too difficult to write a script to do that and I'll take a look. But I wonder if 'launch services' will still try to take a look at the apps there while the disk is mounted for 10-15 mins a day? Anyone know?
