One thing I think didn't get across in this thread on
Tivo was that Tivo doesn't sell any hardware. The DVR units are made by
other companies like Sony, Philips, etc. Tivo sells *ONLY* programming so
if they were to allow you to record for free (which uses the daily guide to
allow the recording) they would never make any money.
It's like telephone service. You can go out and
buy a super duper techno model telephone that costs $300 and unless you buy the
telephone service from the Telco all you have is a $300
paperweight.
