From: "Douglas, Brent" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Be careful launching the Allegro - it has a weakness that I've seen and heard of from a couple flyers: it's not "winchproof" when faced with negative G's. ====================
Mine isn't built-up, it's composite. I've been launching the hell out of it for 4 years, including a couple of scary dumb-thumbs launches that put a lot of negative Gs to it. I have seen pictures of built-up Allegros, but never saw one in real life. As you point out, it's not so easy to make a built-up plane 100% winchproof. Harold Mantz, a master craftsman from our club, has a beautiful Bubble Dancer that he meticulously built exactly to the plans (took nearly a year). On one occasion, he pushed too hard on launch and its tip sections fluttered dramatically, which isn't supposed to happen. He got off the pedal in time to save the plane, but now he takes it a little easier, still zooming it but it more moderately, like the way you would launch an Ava or similar plane. A composite BD will take more abuse. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
