Very interesting thread but I wonder just how effective the zoom launch is because a large number of the pilots I have seen who try to zoom (myself included) gain very little or even lose altitude and in the attempt often end up over stressing their sailplane to the amusement of others. Given the the extrem efficincy of the modern TD ship wouldn't the average pilot gain more by developing good soaring skills to get their time?
