Its why Diesel cars are very popular here. I have a 2.2 litre diesel
Vauxhall Signum (I think they are same parts as Chevy Cavaliers in the
US0) I'm averaging just on 50 miles per gallon over the last 2000 miles
and that is cruising up and down at 70 on motorways (sorry
freeways :-) ) So it costs me about £25 for a return trip to London in
Diesel. The train at peak times is £120 standard class return and £36 at
the cheap times which are often inconvenient for business meetings. It's
cheaper to fly to many places in Europe! I'm flying to Edinburgh next
month £50 return. About the same to Warsaw or Prague. Whole thing seems
crazy. BBC radio was saying this evening that a lot of the price rise in
oil and food is down to future markets and speculation. People believe
there will be a shortage in the future so they are buying up options now
and forcing prices up a bit like th dotcom bubble and the housing
market. The exposure is in the trillions so a crash could well be more
serious than the sub-prime equity squeeze. We do live in a crazy world.
