Dear Friends,

Vince asks Vic his reasons for not endorsing Frances Hutchinson and Brian Burkitt's book The Political Economy of Social Credit and Guild Socialism.  For one thing, I think we were looking for a good, clear introduction for activists.  This is a scholarly book.  As a scholarly book it has its merits, chief of which is that it reminds us that the early left attracted the independent thinkers like William Morris and that the beginnings of social credit are to be found there.  The book is marred by the fact that the authors are at pains to belittle the contribution of Douglas himself in favor of the movement's cofounder, A. R. Orage, going so far as to claim that Orage was the real genius behind the movement and that the early works published under Douglas's name were really written by Orage.  This is poorly argued and unconvincing, and the constant belittling of Douglas is grievous to those of us who appreciate him.
