Hello Stephen:

I use Bodypaint 3D on a regular basis, but not the C4D main UI as much. I tried working with modeling in C4D, and while I like all the mograph deformers that are there by default, it isn't ICE. While I like the painting tools in BP3D, I tried working with it to change my topology, and even I would rather use Maya to do that than work in C4D again...the UI just doesn't click for me (oh god the combo keys shortcuts). Even right now as it is I have extensively changed most of the shortcuts and UI layout in order to be able to paint more efficiently without grimacing every few seconds.

But! I am sure that most people should be able to transition to C4D fine once they get the hang of it, just be aware it won't be like going from XSI > 3ds max or Maya. The UI philosophy is quite different.

Hope that helps somewhat! :)

Yours sincerely,
Siew Yi Liang

Joey... we have survived the same Cubicomp, Matador, Softimage/XSI roller-coaster ride. It seems you have had even more rugs, pulled out from under you, than I have. I am at quite a loss as to how to proceed. Calling me "gun-shy" is an understatement.

I do NOT want to put as much effort into learning the finer points of another software,
to just be put in the same position, yet again.

And just when Redshit3D had come out with such a GREAT GPU render engine.

And, like you said, there is no equivalent to ICE, as far as I can tell.

I am reluctant to go to Maya or 3DMax as they could suffer the same demise. The latest After Effects came bundled with Cinema 4D (lite) and, locally, there have
been a LOT of jobs posted that require Cinema 4D.

Anyone have experience with Cinema 4D?

Indeed. This decision does make one wonder if this will be a
    "CUBICOMP" moment for AD M&E.

Trust is not something sold like a software maintenance agreement.
It's earned. I started using Softimage 20 years ago this very
month. In all those years not even Avid or Microsoft put the
production methodology I use in such jeopardy. The work I have
been doing in Soft is so heavily dependent ICE now it can't be
done the same way or even transferred to Maya or Max. How am I to
replace this? There is no current Autodesk equivalent to
Softimage, especially in regards to ICE.

I understand that softwares mature and new paradigms emerge. I've
    been through the whole Picturemaker->Vertigo->Picturemaker,
    Quantel->Express V, PowerAnimator/TAV->Maya, 3dStudio->Max, and
SI3D->XSI paradigm shifts. I even suffered through the demise of
Aurora, Matador, and Shake. But why isn't there an equivalent
alternative to move to before Softimage is terminated? Even if I
do migrate to another AD M&E software, can I trust that AD won't
abandon it as well? Sketchbook anyone? Can anyone at AD give me a
concrete assurance that this kind of abandonment, and loss of
    investment, won't happen again?

This is probably the worst decisions Autodesk has taken.

Looking back a the Gold Lion at Cannes, VES awards, the BTAA
awards over the last few years where the work done by this close
knit community has been recognised I am shocked you really think
you by killing Softimage you are " committed to providing our
customers with the most technologically advanced products and
    highest quality customer service possible"

My feeling is that you as a company have not gauged correctly how
easy is to loose the trust of an entire community and how hard is
going to get it back if at all possible.

    Good luck
