Surprisingly, writing a toon shader isn't as difficult as you'd think. Like any good tool, the trick is understanding the user's needs and workflow. That's what the toon shaders got right compared to other solutions, such as ability to hide ink line seams of intersecting surfaces. There are also many undocumented features in the toon shaders inherited from mental ray for free, such as texturing ink lines.
