That's what I mean... If there is some test being repeated inside some very small inner loop that makes _that_ much differnce to the runtime, I would think that it could be lifted out with minimal duplication of code. Even more important, this may point to some place that can be optimized to improve performance. What if it turns out that a tweak to the inner loop could give us a 3-4% _improvement_ over the existing code? Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to put into this.
