I've got the same problem, but my chip has the hostid instead of a barcode
printed on the label.:-)
I didn't order a new chip yet because of other problems I want to to solve
first (weak HD, doesn't boot from floppy, ...). For now I enter the hostid and
an ethernet address at every boot:
set-defaults
setenv diag-switch? false
17 0 mkp (making checksum invalid)
8 0 20 E3 E4 E5 08018d mkpl
CTRL-D CTRL-R
The 8 0 20 E3 E4 E5 is some valid(?) ethernet address and 08018d are the last
three bytes of the hostid (look at "a quick-and-dirty guide to restore the
nvram..." in the faq).

Don't know about this yet, I'm still looking for an AUI->BNC adaptor to get my
sun to the net (trying to boot from network via tftp). If it works, I will fix
the other problems and probably get a new idprom-chip...
