The hydraulic buffers used as shock absorbers in the hoist way pit
contain combustible oils. Traction elevators and hydraulic elevators
both usually have these in their pits. Your elevator contractor will
tell you each buffer contains more than an insignificant amount of
oil. So you probably should have that pit sprinkler no matter what
type of elevator it is. Think of those that might be in the cab that
needs to smash into the buffers. That could be the very condition
when the pit sprinkler is needed.

Additionally the non combustible fluid issue is not addressing
hydraulic
elevators but rather traction elevators that don't utilize
hydraulics as
their means of locomotion.
