My favorite story on fire pumps happened in England. As it was a FM job the diesel driver and pump came from the US is Yellow. As the English think all fire related materials must be RED, the contractor received the set in their shop and proceeded to put a heavy coat of English hard RED enamel on the whole affair. When they started up the pump the solenoids were frozen in place by the paint, overheated and set the cabling on fire. This is the same pump that was sitting next to a 1000 gallon tank of taxable truck fuel. The English did not want to use the taxable fuel to fill the tank for the fire pump so they called the home office 45 minutes away to send a drum of untaxed fuel. Having no clean drums to transport the fuel they picked a drum from the used drum area. Result: Manhours and vehicle time wasted, and Oh Yeh, the contamination was transferred into the new fuel tank, gummed up the new fire pump and everything had to be stripped down and cleaned before the pump could be started. Result: the English managers wanted to use the same contractor again because he was a good guy and fixed the problems.
