John,

True, but in the context of this discussion, which spun off of the discussion regarding using a swimming pool as a water source, a bypass would be of no value. In a situation where city water is the source for the fire pump a bypass is always of value.

Richard,

That is correct in terms of a Fire Dept Engine pumping an FDC. As per
the standard the FDC connection is on the discharge side of the pump.

What I was referring to in general terms was the value of a bypass to
allow water, albeit at street pressure, to pass around the pump.

The FDC is supposed to be connected to the system side of the fire pump,
in which case the bypass would be irrelevant.

Roland, et. al.

Dave Phelan pretty much summed up the issues surrounding fire watches.
There is no one size fits all. The determination as to when it is
appropriate to employ a fire watch requires a through evaluation of fire
protection objectives.

For example in a small building where life safety and only life safety
is the issue a fire watch may be employed to patrol, notify the fire
department and evacuate the building. The number of fire watch personnel
must be determined. Not so long ago we had a fire pump burn up in a
high rise. There is no suitable fire watch for this scenario since
suppression is a significant component of life safety and not simply
detection and notification. The building owner had the choice of
evacuating the premises or having a fire department engine 24/7
pressurized on the FDC for the duration of the impairment. The latter
was chosen. (PS- One more reason why a bypass should always be
installed).

Fire Protection is like a jigsaw puzzle, take away too many and/or major
pieces and we loose sight of the big picture.

You would be one tough AHJ.

I don't believe he would be required to shut down but would have to
implement an impairment procedure, part of which is a manned fire watch
24/7. I am sure there are some occupancies that would entail
shutting down the operation, for instance high hazard occupancies,
high occupant facilities (aka The Station), etc. I'll let our AHJ
friends chime in on the specifics.

Rod,

One other thing that might be useful is asking the owner if he is
willing to shut his hotel down if the pool requires maintenance and
the pool has to be drained.
