Steve,
Yes you can derive the section modulus for all materials and cross
sections. There is plenty of software out there that you can use to do
this. If you are going to ascertain the modulus of strut, then I would ask
the manufacturer for all of his calculations and information for his
product. This way you can get the parameters that he is using to determine
if it conforms to NFPA 13. Angle iron, channel iron, pipe, etc is easy to
determine with information from many sources including shareware off the
Internet. The table in NFPA 13 is based on a maximum allowable bending
stress of 15 ksi and a midspan concentrated load from 15 ft (4.6 m) of
water-filled pipe, plus 250 lb (114 kg). Also remember that all components
of pipe hangers are required to be ferrous unless allowed differently by
the AHJ.

Thank You

I don't know the specifics of Tol-Strut, Uni-Strut or Powerstrut load
bearing abilities in a trapeze application, but you were considering
this application in SoCal you would have to furnish a letter from the
manufacturer and possibly one from the project SE as well. I've seen
conduits trapezed on strut, but never piping.

Does anyone know if the "section modulus" is a standardized measurement
or value? If NFPA 13 publishes these values for "pre-engineered"
trapeze materials like pipe and angle iron, can I easily derive the
modulus value for other materials by applying a formula to the
material's dimensions or the manufacturer's stated load bearing
capacity?

As long as we go with the strut as indicated by the manufacturer's
criteria,
we should be OK?? You can't use slotted 1-5/8" strut for much of
anything
as I have seen some try to do on many different occasions.

Unistrut will not work for most trapeeze, section modulus is very low.
