Again, I agree. I feel like the heads need to be added. I believe FM did write the book on ESFR, (although one FM agent did admit they created a monster and they are gradually steering back to control mode instead of supression type sprinklers) I just wanted to be sure I had a leg to stand on for a change and that I wasn't missing something in NFPA. They had the opportunity to space accordingly on the 5 new fans and didn't, as well.
My only other question is the one I asked earlier. Their resolve is to add a head under the center of the fan. This won't affect the other spacing, it would be treated in the way an obstruction is treated correct? If we could respace and be sufficient in the spacing of the other heads that would be the way out, but that is impossible it creates under/over spacing. Certainly there is a diffference between code and FM Global recommendations, but when it comes to ESFR, I think FM wrote the book and I'd be careful when deviating from their bible. Sure, cost impacts need to be included, but an intelligent Owner should agree to the extras, or at least consider them. Any intake plenums with diffusers, or just an open intake? What are the sizes of the fan intakes? If the fans are roof mounted is the opening level with the underside of the roof (no plenum), and what relative distance is there (vertically) between the sprinkler and intake? Some AHJ's and others think that meeting FM is required just like it's another Code. Craig L.
