My girlfriend's son just bought a house in NH. During the walk-through before the closing, they caught someone in the basement stealing the copper pipe off the plumbing system. The scary thing is the house had been vacated only the day before.

Tom,

That's not so far fetched. I recall reading a story where thieves had
stolen aluminum light stanchions. They simple pulled them over knowing the
bases were designed to break away upon being impacted by a vehicle.
Obviously it takes an unscrupulous scrap dealer to make this work, which
ultimately was the undoing of this criminal enterprise.

In our own jurisdiction it was discovered that installed copper water pipe
was being stolen from vacant and or buildings under construction.

A crew of amateurs were just arrested up this way, caught stealing storm
drain and catch basin covers.
Yes, heavy ductile iron covers and all for scrap value. Amazing.

Yes we have just recently encountered this situation in Philadelphia. One
customer is missing 30+. We
have purchased some new female swivels but I'm not optimistic that there is
enough standardization for
this easy fix in most cases. I suspect that the entire fitting will have to
be replaced. Theft might
be prevented by epoxy in the set screw recess.
