Todd,

I would take the room height as a critical factor. The attic head requires a
CEILING below the roof structure, so I think the height is important. The BB
head is listed for a span of 60 feet, but the span for the Hip sprinkler is
28 feet. As the maximum listed roof slope for the BB sprinkler is 12:12, the
maximum height is 30 feet. But the max roof slope for the Hip sprinkler is
7:12. So the max height is 16'-4". Where the room height was within these
limits, I have used the attic heads (actually only the BB head so far), in
non-attic situations, with the flow selected for the ROOM HEIGHT (not the
span). Please note this interpretation is my own and what I think is
reasonable. Tyco may contradict, I'm not sure.

In your situation, I wouldn't use it due to the room height. Also, your roof
slope appears to be over 7:12.

Subject: another Attic Sprinkler question

I am designing a system for the top level of a tower (the same one from a
previous post). The space is roughly 25 x 25. The height at the hip is 22
feet and at the peak of the roof is about 30 ft. The peak is in the
geometric center and there are 4 sloped surfaces, similar to the top of the
Washington Monument. The space is almost completely filled by an empty,
open-topped steel tank about 20 ft high. There are existing sprinklers at
the roof, but the piping is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. I
designed a system using 7 regular sprinklers. The contractor who has to do
the job has asked if the Tyco Attic Hip sprinklers could be used in this
situation. My immediate reaction was no because I don't think this qualifies
under the definition of an attic. However, I thought I would put it out to
see if anyone has used them in this type of situation.
