Is the occupancy light hazard?
Yes
Are there any other combustibles besides the roof construction?.
The floor. Although very little is exposed since the bottom of tank
is sitting directly on it.
Can significant other materials be stored or used here?
No the tank takes up almost the entire room. I have to turn sideways
to get between it and the brick outside wall, and I'm not a big person.
Will the tank cause sprinkler flow obstructions?
The tank rests on the floor. The only thing you are really protecting
with the sprinklers is the roof and the floor exposed in the corners.
Take a glass and fold a piece of paper around it in as tight a square
as you can. That is roughly what I am dealing with.
Is the tank filled with water?
No. It has been empty a long time and will continue to be.
If you can answer these Q's you will have the answer.

Subject: another Attic Sprinkler question
I am designing a system for the top level of a tower (the same one
from a previous post). The space is roughly 25 x 25. The height at
the hip is 22 feet and at the peak of the roof is about 30 ft. The
peak is in the geometric center and there are 4 sloped surfaces,
similar to the top of the Washington Monument. The space is almost
completely filled by an empty, open-topped steel tank about 20 ft
high. There are existing sprinklers at the roof, but the piping is in
bad shape and needs to be replaced. I designed a system using 7
regular sprinklers. The contractor who has to do the job has asked if
the Tyco Attic Hip sprinklers could be used in this situation. My
immediate reaction was no because I don't think this qualifies under
the definition of an attic. However, I thought I would put it out to
see if anyone has used them in this type of situation.
