Scott, This brings back a lesson at the University of Maryland. Harmathy's Rules of fire resistance would indicate that you can put any covering over a base material that has a rating and the rating will only go up. The interior finish rating will be different and possibly a concern, but the fire resistance rating of your Type X gypsum assembly will not decrease. Check out the following for a discussion on Harmathy's rules and specifically Rule 2. I don't think that it is restricted to wood, but it may be. http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/pdf1988/white88a.pdf

I have a project that requires a fire-resistance rated barrier in the corridor and sleeping rooms. It is a 2 story, modular construction with the modular "pieces-of-the-building" arriving to the site on trailers and welded together. The interior walls are all covered with Type X gypsum, that has subsequently been covered with a vinyl laminate. I have not been able to find a UL rating for such a "configured" system. While I realize in a sprinklered facility, this vinyl will not have a runaway effect during a fire in the hallways or sleeping mods (while that makes some of you cringe, realize too, that the paper on gypsum board burns and contributes to the fire as well), what I am wondering is "does someone out there know of a "rated" or "listed" system with vinyl covered Type X gypsum board?" scot deal excelsior fire (i know this question is more appropriate on other forums, but they be slower, too) _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field) _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum To Unsubscribe, send an email to:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Put the word unsubscribe in the subject field)
