I know it's been around since 1978 because I was taught about it in
"Automatic's" design school.

Greg,
The requirement for sprinklers in coolers and freezers has been in NFPA
13 since before the handbook format started. I recall seeing something
prior to the handbook, however the 1983 handbook edition states as a
formal interpretation...
Question: Is it the intent of section 4-4 to require sprinkler
protection in walk-in type coolers and freezers in fully sprinklered
buildings?
Answer: Yes.

If I may tap into the collective memory bank of sprinkler knowledge, How
long have sprinklers been required in coolers/freezers per NFPA 13?
Thanks Gregg
