With all that said, how will one PRV at the pump prevent high pressures
at the wet systems and allow higher pressure for the Quell system when
all are fed from the same loop attached to the same pump discharge?

Subject: RE: Pressure reducing valve location for a fire pump

I will have to find out more from the salesman. He is the one who met
with the Quell representative. The Quell systems will be fed off the UG
loop supplied by the fire pump. I thought the purpose of the PRV was
originally to provide protection to my wet systems in the warehouse but
some of these systems are fed off the UG loop also. The only reason I
would see to use a PRV is that the Quell system will require a flat
curve close to 175psi. Guess I need to find out more.
Thanks,
Dewayne

OK, I'm a bit confused so help me out.

You have a potential project that will require high pressures which are
yet undefined, so you are installing a pump with a total discharge
pressure of ????.

Is the purpose of the pressure reducing valve to protect other standard
175psi rated systems from the over pressure?

I have been told that there will be a future freezer building that will
have a Quell system which requires the high pressures. This is a new
installation.

What's the purpose of the reducing valve in this application?

Is this a new pump, existing pump, what are the design considerations
warranting this?

Subject: Pressure reducing valve location for a fire pump

I have to install a pressure reducing valve on the discharge side of
the fire pump. I know from past discussions that if standpipes are
present, the valve must be installed after the last control valve for
the fire pump to satisfy NFPA 14. What if this is a large warehouse
falling strictly under 13? Could it be placed between the pump
discharge and check valve (just like pressure relief valve on a diesel
FP) and sized per minimum relief valve in 2-20 (NFPA 20 99ed)? I have a
2000gpm pump with a 8" discharge flange and would like to get a 8"
pressure reducing valve to work instead of a 10in (size required for
discharge pipe) to save some money. I checked the spec sheets and the
8" valve can handle the flow at 150%.

Thanks,
Dewayne
