Im not sure where in the 2007 edition since we are only using the 2002 edition but here's how and when I see or require them in projects: In a project where there is concealed combustible construction such as truss voids and intersistal spaces when the building requires full NFPA 13 protection (versus 13R & 13D) then they use the CC heads and follow the spacing and design criteria of the manufacturer. Often times this 'full' coverage comes about in buildings otherwise under the 13D or 13R standards but due to height & area increases (modifications as otherwise known) the building is required to have full NFPA 13 coverage. There also have been some recent changes to the listing information for CPVC piping when run in concealed combustible spaces that require sprinkler protection that you MUST use a listed specific application concealed combustible head. Occasionally concealed combustible spaces are protected with SSU or even SSP heads but that is no longer permissible when using CPVC piping. I guess my answer is that most often times the building code which drives the actual sprinkler requirement will indicate what level of protection is required (13, 13R or 13D) and from there you follow the standard for where and what gets protected. Simple case in point is a residential building 4 stories of wood frame construction. this would seem to be a 13R building and therefore exempt the attic of sprinkler protection. If the design professional has elected to take the area modification to build larger per floor than the building code permits (Table 503) then the sprinkler protection must be in accordance with NFPA 13 and now we suddenly see a suppressed attic and concealed combustible spaces ...... truss voids or intersistal floor spaces if they cant make any of the exemptions in NFPA 13 8.14.1 of the 2002 edition. Just one of many possible examples. Dave P.
