In answer to (1) use SSU/SSP Just like the old days. Part B of (1) is a little tougher, because at some point you change from light hazard to OH. Whenever it's OH use SSU/SSP. Just because there is ductwork or a fan or pump, doesn't make the space OH. Do you have open flame heating appliances, is it an OIL tank or just a well troll tank, or elect HWH. If per part (2) if it QUALIFIES as OH use SSU/SSP. If not use CC's. Most important if you use CPVC is the 1000 Sf draft stopped area, the 36" max and 12" min. (36 and 12 apply to all types of pipe.) One of the few places that describe what the draft stop shall do, and be.

I've 2 other questions. (1) Tyco cut sheets state this head is used for light hazard. If the area is OH what happens? Sometimes a crawlspace is used as a mechanical room, with tanks, pumps and other mechanical equipment. (2) Sometimes a crawlspace is non-combustible with drywall attached to bottom of wood joists or TJI's, but is required to be sprinklered due to storage/mech. equipment etc. I would think 8.15.1.6 (07) should apply, but is the wording clear? In this case, I think the 36" clearance is from floor to ceiling (bottom of drywall) of the crawlspace. Right?
