The last scenario that we did (which effectively killed any further
evaluation) was 4 floating clouds with a 1 ft gap and the fire at the
intersection of the four clouds. It wasn't pretty. SO how much room
you have to discuss depends on the number of clouds or rather
intersecting gaps within the room.
I have placed back on the To Do list to look at smaller openings with
many clouds, just two clouds, and the perimeter. We've done some
preliminary work with the perimeter only but need a more detailed
evaluation to take it to the technical committee.

NFPA 13 2002 Edition - Section 8.14.1.2.2 - "Noncombustible and

a plenum".
Maybe I did not describe correctly the ceiling construction. The
ceiling will be installed throughout the space(s) at the same
elevation. The "openings" are 7" gaps along the perimeter walls or
between sections of the ceiling within the room. This only occurs
in a few of the spaces/rooms and those rooms are separated by full
height wall from other spaces.
I believe the section above may adequately address this issue to the
point I can meet with AHJ concerning sprinkler protection above the
ceiling space.
