If the tank is sized to supply full flow for the total duration I would
agree. We frequently down size tanks by considering their replenish rate
using automatic refill.

Subject: Storage tank fill line

Is an underground storage tank (designed per NFPA 22) required to have
an
automatic fill line (as opposed to a manual fill line)? In this case,
the
tank supplies a vertical turbine fire pump that supplies a sprinkler
system.

Section 5.6.4.1 of NFPA 20 (07) says "A stored supply plus reliable
automatic refill shall be sufficient to meet the demand placed upon it
for
the design duration." OK, but I'm not finding anything that says the
refill
is required to be automatic.

Jump to NFPA 22 (03). Section 13.4 addresses filling of the tank.
Section
13.4.6 addresses filling of suction tanks and talks about where an
automatic
fill line must connect to the tank, but doesn't say an automatic fill is
required. Section 13.4.1.4 says the control valve on a bypass loop used
to
fill a tank shall be kept closed except when the tank is being filled.
Sounds manual to me.

So all this leads me to believe the fill line is allowed to be manual or
automatic (designer's choice). Or am I missing something?
