Tire remanufacturer had bought an existing building in an existing industrial
park. Existing pump met demand but on-site water storage tank did not satisfy
duration requirements. Tank was manual fill. Underwriter required that tank
be changed to auto fill and accepted the installation.

NFPA 20 says the break tank fill is to be automatic, but nothing about the main
water storage tank.

NFPA 24 talks about WHEN it's automatic do such and such......... "where a
separate fill pipe is used, automatic filling shall be permitted"...but doesn't
give any mandate about the fill having to be automatic.

Sounds like and Underwriter/AHJ kind of decision.
