All of that's true! However is 13 the only code or standard you use to build
a building? All I'm saying is "If your codes include NFPA 101, then you can
use that exception." If your jurisdiction has not adopted 101 that could
make it un-usable.

There is life beyond 13.

Thom,

This was discussed the other day on forum and was determined that the closet
exceptions in 101 that were put into 13 chapter 21 was an oversight and
should not be used. Ed Kramer pointed out that "The 2009 ROP
(13-444) and the ROC (13-249) have accepted a proposal to move the entire
contents of section 21.20 to an annex, showing the intent of the committee".
It doesn't make sense to exclude these when 101 had these exemptions before
2002 (chapter 13 then and chapter 21 now) but just because they were
compiled for ease in 13 they now apply but didn't then. Usually when there
is a conflict AND both standards are applicable the most stringent applies.

Look at NFPA 101 exemption for closets.

26.3.6.3.4 In buildings sprinklered in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for
the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, closets less than 12 ft2 (1.1 m2) in
area in individual dwelling units shall not be required to be sprinklered.

And while we're here, back to the water heater/ sprinkler issue. Water
heater closets are required by NFPA 101 to be sprinklered.

26.3.6.3.5 In buildings sprinklered in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for
the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, closets that contain equipment such
as washers, dryers, furnaces, or water heaters shall be sprinklered
regardless of size.
26.3.6.3.6 In existing lodging or rooming houses, sprinkler installations

Jay, I think you're stuck with including the closet sprinks in your calcs -
it would be odd for a residential closet to have self-closing doors.
Any
idea why the architect wants QR sprinks?
