Tony: Have been out of the office and didn't read your e-mail until this morning.
NFPA 14, 7.3.2 and IBC 905.4 both say essentially the same thing, that there shall be a Class I standpipe hose connection in all of the following locations ... and then they list the required locations. Conspicuously, neither the code nor standard says that there shall be a STANDPIPE at those locations, just a STANDPIPE HOSE CONNECTION. My take is that it is clearly within the intent of both that a single standpipe could supply multiple hose connections at a scissor stair condition, HOWEVER, NFPA 14 defines a branch line as, "A piping system, generally in a horizontal plane, connecting not more than one hose connection with a standpipe." So you pretty much have to supply each connection with a dedicated 2-1/2" branch directly from the common standpipe, or it immediately becomes a horizontal standpipe when you supply two connections off of a single lateral pipe. And if it were to feed three or more connections on a given floor (even if it's a vertical riser) the most remote standpipe demand gets boosted to 750 GPM per 7.10.1.1.2. The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the opinion or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and Hose Systems. But can you have one common standpipe with hose connections at each stairs?
