Now there is verbiage relating to the prohibition of "foreign" systems not
entering or passing through VAULTS,(450.47).
However sprinkler protection for the vault can pass through to protect the
vault. But this is specifically for transformer VAULTS.

In section 110.21 - 110.26 dealing with electrical installation the
restrictions apply to foreign piping running in the WORKING and DEDICATED
electrical spaces only. Sprinkler piping has some exemptions to the rules
based on some specific installation guidelines.

Subject: RE: Pipe passing thru Electrical Equipment Rooms

NFPA 70 NEVER SAYS "OTHER SYSTEMS MAY NOT BOTH ENTER AND LEAVE THE ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENT ROOM" It only talks about the dedicated space, as we've discussed
many times. The "Show Me" always seems to become "Because I said so" or We've
always done it"

I love word searches, but I'm pretty sure that "Not" would really require a lot
of time to cover all the times it appears in a document of this size.
And "Through" is really heavy lifting too.

Proving it doesn't exist is really a pain in the butt. Maybe a committee member
of 70 could respond? If not a formal interpatation may be called for, since
this one seems to never go away.

I understand that this spells out the areas sprinkler pipe can and can't go.
But where does it say you can or can't pass through the electrical room.

Well he needs to re-read his NFPA 70, we reviewed this with excerpts from the
NFPA 70 Handbook which clearly describes and depicts the allowance of the
piping through the room whether it serves that room or not as long as certain
clearances were maintained.

But hey, whatever, it's his rodeo.

Where we are, the electrical inspector does not allow us to enter in and back
out of electrical rooms. We can pipe in with pipe for sprinklers but we can not
exit out. This includes bringing UG through the floor and exiting through a
wall or ceiling. It's kinda like the roach motel - roaches check in but they
don't check out!

The pipe is allowed to pass through the electrical room. However there were
restricted spaces within the rooms over or in front of certain equipment where
the pipes were not permitted to be run.

Is your electrical room sprinklered?

If it is not it must meet the criteria set forth in #13 and in the Building
code otherwise it is to be sprinklered:
a. 2 hour fire-rated enclosure including protection for penetrations.
b. Only dry type electrical equipment is used. (you need to ask, don't assume
this one) c. The room is dedicated to electrical equipment only.
d. No combustible storage is permitted to be stored in the room.

Subject: Pipe passig thru Electrical Equipment Rooms

Forum:
I think that this subject may have been previously discussed a long time ago,
but I can't remember the final judgment, thus, the question is, how does one
justify passing pipe thru electrical or similar type rooms when its prohibited
by the NEC code? This particular installation is to meet # 13, Light Hazard,
and the local authority has no problem with it, and the rooms have Fire
Sprinklers in them, which are mandated by the locals. The objection comes from
the EOR. Help would be greatly appreciated.
