You have two good answers so far, but it is a trick question.  1972 is
probably close to when they were first referred to and the mid 1980's is
probably when they become more predominant, but they still aren't
required for all systems and occupancies, so the question to you is, do
you mean required for a specific occupancy or when did the use of
hydraulic calculations for sprinkler system design first show up in NFPA
13?
