Good stuff. Thanks John and all. I think I need a trip to Europe now... Matthew J. It's usually the B phase in a Three Phase Delta where a phase has been center tapped and grounded. This creates a neutral. That's helpful because if you need 120 V single phase for something that's how you get it. The voltage between Phase A and the neutral will be 120 (208 / 1.732) and Phase C to the neutral 120 V. However if you measure the B phase to the neutral you will find appx 180 volts on 208 Delta, the wild or high leg ! The high leg, will be marked in red or orange. To figure the high leg voltage out take the nominal phase to phase voltage, divide by two and multiply by 1.732. (208 / 2 = 104 X 1.732 = 180 V on the high leg). Thus the high leg is unusable for single phase power yet unsuspecting persons connect 120 V single phase loads from Phase B to neutral and soon after smell smoke. Willis Sent: Wednesday, August 26, 2009 11:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: 3 from 1 I need some education of Phase Converters. A 300 gpm Fire Pump (Tank fed), is supplied by one of these things. Single phase only is available, so one of these has been installed to make it work. Installed in '06-07ish, just replaced main board in controller. I was there to do test following part replace. 240vac, dropped to 106-108 across the 3 as indicated on panel. Middle leg showed 422vac in event log, as high peak. When started, pump shaft (vertical) jumped up and down repeatedly. We red tagged it and are waiting on word from electricians. Pump Motor checked out fine. I know they are not allowed, but it was approved, so., I just test it. R/ Matt Matthew J.
