A little background may help. A few years ago there was a large number of glue
joint failures and most where as a result of a service call. I personally
visited with the contractor and installer about their loss. Blazemaster was
saying the these losses were caused by fitters that were not trained. This
was simply not true. Some of the largest losses were experienced by some very
good, well trained fitters. So why then were the joints pulling out after
being glued? After much testing ourselves we found that CURE TIME will vary
depending on temperature, humidity, square cut of pipe, water pressure after
water turned on and whether or not pipe is all the way home. The real world
we work in is different than doing testing at UL with perfect conditions
including controlled humidity, temperature and perfectly saw cut pipe pushed
and held at pipe stop. To prove our point to ourselves we went out in the
field and cut out VPVC fittings that had been installed with system in
operation for a period of time and found that even though many joints were not
perfect they held with no problem because they had time to cure.

We did have a CPVC summit with all the manufacturers and a number of
contractors participating to review installation guidelines. CURE TIME WAS on
the list for new testing. Spears changed their guidelines to 24 hour minimum
and Blazemaster is still committed to do the testing. The good news is that
the acceptance of 24 hour minimum CURE TIME has dramatically reduced these
losses. RelMark appreciates all of your comments and if you need any
additional information or have questions please call.

To all:

For the reason for the recommended 24 hour cure time go to the RelMark website
www.relmarkgroup.com and click on "Building Owner insists CPVC system be
charged before curing? Get a release!" to see some alternative ways to work
with the owner. And to protect the contractor and his assets.

Here, we have to write the impairment procedure. I have to sit with client
every time.
What a gyp!
td

Impairments are also covered in #25, but it's something you can reference,
excerpt and forward to the OWNER to implement- we have enough risk in this
business.

I have always made the owner take care of this procedure, I just give him or
her the information and let them run with it.

Jim Johnston

But let us remember that Impairment is the owners responsibility and not the
contractors.
Coordinating impairment procedures exposes the contractor to additional risks.
I would advise the owner to consult the local Fire Marshal.
