A 2' x 4' light fixture is only 2' wide, so there is no need for protection beneath. Although one dimension is 4', it is not 4' in its least dimension (width). Consider that there are probably conduits, pipes, and even the grid for the ceiling that are over 4' long, but you do not sprinkler below them for the same reason (the are under 4' wide).
