Worth, Unless I'm missing something, if the light is recessed there is no minimum distance to be away from the light. Generally the architect specifies a minimum distance to ceiling grid for aesthetic purposes but other than needing enough room to get your escutcheon on, there should be no other issue if there is nothing in the specs. I always try to stay 12" away just so my work looks professional but that is not a code requirement.
