I completely agree, but why aren't the non-fluorescent lights addressed for
non-residential areas? When we tell a customer the sprinkler needs to be moved
away from the light and they ask for a code reference what do you tell them? In
this market you can't always sell preferences or looks. When we know it
shouldn't be right next to it.

Subject: RE:

Fluorescent light fixtures and HVAC diffusers should not be confused as far as
heat output.

Typically as said before in a 2x2 grid ceiling the Architect likes to see heads
in centers of tiles. If you do not have that restriction then do whatever
works but realize that a consistent spacing from the edge of the grid makes for
a better looking / less offensive appearing system from the A/E and owner
perspective. Noting that in odd shaped rooms it can often be a challenge to
make the system work AND make people happy. But there's nothing more
aggravating to the architect than some random shotgun approach to head spacing.

Usually I try to stay no less than 6" off the grid whenever possible if I have
no Center-of-tile mandate. But the fluorescent fixture poses no heat issue in
regards to the sprinkler. Now an incandescent fixture, MV, MH or Halogen,
different story.

Look at the requirement for 155F sprinklers in relation to hot air diffusers.

8.3.2.5 (c) - Residential areas require 24" for ceiling mounted diffusers.

8.3.2.5 (a) - Non-Residential areas require 12" for ceiling mounted diffusers.

Why the difference? Actually 8.3.2.5(c) reads "residential areas" not
residential sprinklers.

Yes it does but with no other guidelines to go by I always used it as a minimum
to keep the heads away, figuring the Residential heads and QR heads have
different spray patterns but should still react the same to a heat from a light
fixture.

8.3.2.5(c) is for residential sprinklers. Worth indicates light hazard/quick
response.

8.3.2.5(A)(B) do not have any requirements in regards to light fixtures.

All based on 2007 edition. 2002 is the same.
